John spent a week of intensive treatment with Dr. Yeh. Acupuncture, herbs, counseling on diet, and other advice all helped John to improve. However, the one thing that had the most impact on John’s health was Dr. Yeh’s statement, “I pray for all my patients.” I even had a dream in which Dr. Yeh was saying that John would heal. His prayers gave John faith in a situation that otherwise seemed hopeless.

The third very important element is repentance. Jesus asks the person to repent. To repent means to change. When you’re ill, it is because your thoughts and actions are moving against Universal Law, they are incompatible with the Creator. You can be healed with desire and faith, but in order to be permanently healed it means understanding how you are out of harmony with God and changing to be in alignment.

“Later on, Jesus found him (the man who had been restored to health) in the temple precincts and said to him: ‘Remember, now, you have been cured. Give up your sins so that something worse may not overtake you.’” (John 5:14)

“Sin” symbolizes a mistake against God, so this means, “Change the mistakes you’ve been making and get right with Universal Law so that you can stay healthy!”

I knew a young man who was plagued by allergies and asthma throughout his childhood and adolescence. As a young adult, he decided he wanted to be healed of this painful condition. He was a swimmer, and was unable to swim when the asthma restricted his breathing. A student of metaphysics, the young man learned that his sinus and breathing difficulties were caused by attitudes of self pity and thinking he could never fulfill desires. In short, he was a victim!

He examined this, and noted how he had accepted the limitation that he would always be poor and struggling. He imagined, therefore, that he could never have the freedom and prosperity he desired. Upon reflection and with the help of counseling, he began to identify his many talents and skills. He was very artistic and had a fine sense of design. He had a quick mind. He took a course in computer drafting and in a short time was hired by a lucrative firm.

Soon, this young man was financially solvent. He paid off his debts, saved some money, and discovered that he had much more talent than he had ever realized. One day, in the height of the allergy season, he was running to catch a ball and realized that he had all the breath he could ever want! He had healed his allergies without drugs. He was free! He could breathe!

He had repented; he changed his habitual pattern of “victim thinking,” resulting in healing that continues to this day.

Healing is an art, a science, and a spiritual endeavor. If you want to be healed, you must have faith that you will be healed and that there’s some healing power you can call upon. Ultimately all healing, creation, and love comes from God. With faith, you can imagine yourself being whole, living to be like the God who created you. Healing involves a willingness to change and to produce understanding— to move toward the light of awareness. With desire, faith, and repentance, anyone can become whole. This is spiritual, holy, permanent healing.
